Di origini egiziane, Tyga è il cugino di Travis McCoy, cantante del gruppo musicale Gym Class Heroes. Ha iniziato ad ottenere popolarità aprendo le esibizioni dei Fall Out Boy e dei Gym Class Heroes durante il Young Wild Things Tour nel 2007. Nello stesso anno pubblica il suo primo mixtape Young On Probation a cui collaborano Jay Rock, The Pack ed altri. Il suo singolo di debutto Coconut Juice viene puubblicato nel 2008 a cui segue il mixtape No Introduction the Series: April 10, pubblicato ad aprile. La seconda parte della serie, No Introduction the Series: May 10, viene pubblicata a maggio.
Il suo brano musicale Diamond Life viene inserito nella colonna sonora dei videogiochi Madden NFL 09 Need for Speed: Undercover e del film Fighting.
