The Gallery is particularly famous for its sculptures by Michelangelo: the Prisoners, the St.Matthew and, especially, the statue of David which was transferred here, to the specially designed tribune, from Piazza della Signoria in 1873.
In the adjacent rooms, which were part of two former convents, important works of art were collected here in the 19th century from the Academy of Design, the Academy of Fine Arts and from suppressed convents.

GALLERIA DELL'ACCADEMIA
Entrance and ticket office accessible from no.60 (glass doors and flat pavement without steps). The room of the Colosso, the museum of Musical Instruments, the Prigioni gallery, the Bartolini room/plaster gallery are all fully accessible (access to the latter via a slightly steep ramp). The Giotto and 1300's rooms, and the bookshop, are all accessible.
Before the stairs to the upper floor (late 1300's and icons), there is a disabled toilet on the right, with a large lift in front of it which goes to the upper floor.
To visit the upper rooms (late 1300's, up to Lorenzo Monaco) there are two further stairlifts. The first measures approx. 68/70 x 70cm – maximum carrying capacity 150kg. The second, for a second small flight of stairs further along, was recently installed (2009) and measures approx. 70/75 x 80cm – maximum carrying capacity 225kg. All stairlifts have been declared fully functional (at least currently) – but please bear in mind that they may occasionally be out of order.
