It is one of the most famous museums in the world for its extraordinary collection of painting and ancient statues. Its collections of paintings of 1300 and of the Reinassance, includes some of the greatest masterpieces of the art. Suffice it to mention Giotto, Simone Martini, Piero della Francesca, Beato Angelico, Filippo Lippi, Botticelli, Mantegna, Correggio, Leonardo, Raffaello, Michelangelo, Caravaggio.
Not less important are the collections of German and Dutch painters such as Dürer, Rembrandt, Rubens.
The gallery is locates at the last floor of the building set up between 1560 and 1580 due to the project of Giorgio Vassari as the official base of the main administrative offices of the Tuscan state.
It was built for want of the grand duke Francesco I and enriched thanks to the contribution of several member of the Medici, art lovers and collectors of paintings, sculptures and art objects.
It was widened under Lorena dinasty, succeded to Medici and then by the Italian State.
In the Vasarian coimplex there are some other important collections: the Collection Contini Bonacossi and the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi.
Vasarian corridor: a suspended corridor made by Vasari in 1565, links the Uffizi building with Palazzo Vecchio and Palazzo Pitti. Here, some of the most important paintings of 1600 are displayed as well as the collection of self-portraits.
