La band è nata nel 2002 dall'incontro del chitarrista Mark Jansen (ex After Forever) e della cantante Helena Michaelsen ai quali si sono aggiunti Jeroen Simons (Cassiopeia) alla batteria, Coen Jansen alle tastiere, Ad Sluijter alla chitarra e Yves Huts (Axamenta) al basso. Inizialmente la band prese il nome di "Sahara Dust".
Nel novembre del 2002 venne registrato un demo intitolata Cry for the Moon, della quale furono rilasciate solo 100 copie nel gennaio 2003, e che conteneva solo due canzoni: Cry for the Moon e Illusive Consensus.
Dopo l'uscita del demo, Helena Michaelsen uscì dalla band e fu sostituita da Simone Simons.

i consider myself a great fan of thiers and this was first time i saw them live. oh boy, i have to tell you that it was amazing experience. i saw thier videos on youtube, but that doesn't compare to seing them live. absolute legends!

È stato il mio primo concerto degli Epica, è stato il 18 Gennaio 2017. Sono sicurissimo che non sarà lultimo. Hanno suonato al Live Music Club insieme ai Beyond The Black e i Powerwolf. La serata più bella di sempre.
